Enid Blyton's Noddy at the seaside
Published in Unknown Binding by Purnell Books ()
Author: Enid Blyton
Average review score:

Wonderful stories if read with sensitivity.
I also shared most of the Noddy stories with my brother when I was young. My daughter is almost 4 and just loves Noddy and The Noddy Shop. I was hoping to complete the set now, but it seems used copies are hard to come by. I hope the stories will be reissued, in the original hardcover size for the next generation to love. Some sections do require some sensitivity by an older reader since some stereotying or apparent racism requires context. Wonderful, wonderful stories!

Florida Gardening by the Sea

Author: Mary Jane McSwain

Florida Gardening by the Sea
I found this book to be extremely helpful for the Florida gardener who actually leaves on the beachfront and the gardener who lives further inland.

This book is easy to read and extremely informative, especially for the Florida newcomer who is beginning to realize that you just can't grow that northern favorite down here.

A gentle architecture, from Port-Grimaud to Port-Liberté
Published in Unknown Binding by Pheon Books in association with John Wiley & Sons Limited ()
Author: François Spoerry
Average review score:

For those who love both New-York and Riviera
Two Spoerry masterworks are harbours. One became famous in the 70's when the French discovered they could avoid spoiling Provence landscapes and sea-shore by building marinas instead of leaving anyone build his own house. This reference to Le Corbusier theory on public space is quite appropriate at Port-Grimaud, a few miles away from "La Cité Radieuse" from Le Corbusier in Marseilles. When I discovered Port Liberté some years ago it was not finished. It already had this flavour of adventure that made Spoerry previous work attractive. Spoerry is not only an architect. He also patented electric cars that strangely look quite similar to Smart vehicles... This book tells you a lot about the genesis of Spoerry works. You will like it.

Scorpian Rising: A Seaside Noir
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (January, 2000)
Author: Anthony Frewin
Average review score:

forGET Carter
I don't know what book the other review of Scorpian Rising is talking about, but it's not this one. A slip up somewhere.

What we have here is a rollicking English gangster tale. Vincent is cool, like if old james Bond wasn't a pansy and worked for the mob instead of Her Majesty.

This is a good story, though i don't think anyone will be surprised by the revelations it holds. I'm saying this as a warningt o readers who like 'mystery' in their plots. This is NOT a mystery novel. i don't like mystery novels. Unless james Crumley is a mystery novelist, in which case I like, what, five mystery novels? I go for Jim Thompson, David Goodis, Charles Willeford, Paul Cain and James M. Cain. Hardboiled. Noir. Whatever. Just good hard hitting stories.

And that is what Mr. Frewin has given us. Better than The Sopranos. This is the best mobster novel i've read in a long, long time.

Give it a shot.

Seaside Bible Vest Pocket With New Testament & Psalms
Published in Hardcover by Nelson Bibles (15 January, 1984)
Author: Nelsonword
Average review score:

2 cents
For those who would like a pocket size new testament bible that is a bit classier than most. It has a leather-like look, gold edging, and a red ribbon marker. Sometimes the red-letter is off slightly from the black lettering, but generally, its what you need to carry anywhere you go. It litterally fits in any pocket. I've found myself pulling it out while walking or during prayer times.

It does not include proverbs, unfortunately. I wouldn't call it a children's bible either, though it is advertised as one.

By the Shore
Published in Hardcover by Atlantic Monthly Press (May, 1999)
Author: Galaxy Craze
Average review score:

Lukewarm at best
I picked this book up, not knowing anything about it, but thought the synopsis sounded interesting, and the cover was pretty. The old adage is true, "Don't judge a book by it's cover". I enjoyed the style of Ms. Craze's writing, but kept waiting for something to happen. The drama was clearly lacking. I spent the entire book waiting for something to happen. The storylines I'm accostomed to build and build, carving out intricate characters and events that lead up to a huge moment. By The Shore was a series of equally small events that left little impact. Despite my mild disappointment, I do believe Ms. Craze will write something else eventually that I may enjoy. She is obviously talented, but By The Shore fell short for me. I'll see what she has to offer next.

enchanting trip back to the weird world of pre-adolescence
I was told about this book by a friend at work. I found it engaging and delightful, May a sympathetic and very real character. I do not find her insight and wisdom to be artificial or "adult". Let's give 12 year olds a little more credit! I remember being pretty fabulous at that age, and so is May. The other characters were also interesting, well developed. I have recommended this book to several friends, all are enjoying it. I am very impressed by this debut and look forward to Ms. craze's next venture.

alluring and understated
Usually, I'm turned off by writing that calls any -any!- attention to itself, so I was surprised to find myself admiring Craze's understated and evocative prose, even as I was drawn into her plot. No car chases or Jackie-Collins-style love affairs, which accounts for the sour grapes reviews upthread, just the slow process by which a girl, essentially on her own, begins to understand the complications of hope and family and life.

That summation sounds pat, but there is nothing pat about this book. A small masterpiece.
